Tool and Die Journeyman

Job Summary:

The Phoenix Group is seeking to add a Tool and Die Consultant to our Technical Services Team. The Consultant will be tasked with building the tool and die practice with Phoenix Group, administering training, and providing technical services as needed to multiple manufacturing customers facing difficulties with their tooling. The individual will play a crucial role in new vehicle program launches with a wide array of vehicle manufacturers and have the opportunity to work under a leading industry expert and take over main consulting services at later date.

Expectations and Role Scope:

  • Provide consultative services to companies in need of tool and die assistance (training, quality improvement, maintenance, etc).
    • Stamping Process Control, (Cold Forming and Hot Stamping)
    • Sheet Metal Mechanical Properties (including, Low carbon Steel, Advanced High Strength Steel [AHSS], Aluminum, and Stainless Steel).
  • Consult on formability practices, die improvements, maintenance, launch, and production process improvement support.
    • Strain Analysis and report generation (manual and photometric)
    • Nearness to failure evaluations
    • Process evaluation input/output documentation
    • Observations and Recommendations
    • Photographic documentation
  • Evaluate material utilization (cost savings evaluations; material thickness (gauge) or grade of material being utilized, blank size and shape adjustments)
    • Throughput improvements
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical schematics to propose design changes and improvements that meet desired outcomes.
  • Conduct quality investigations and root cause analysis when necessary.
  • Market and sell consulting expertise to new and existing customers.
  • Provide rapid turnaround tooling repair/ maintenance consultations.
  • Contribute to product containment scenarios and assist with troubleshooting root cause issues if requested.
  • Up to 15 – 75% travel in North America Region based on customer demands.

Physical Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree highly preferred with 5+ years of experience as a Tool and Die Maker / Journeyman status.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing items up to 20lbs consistently and 50lbs occasionally.
  • Strong background with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Flexibility to work weekends and travel to customer locations when needed via plane and car.
  • Strong communications skills and ability to build meaningful connections with diverse audiences.
